Jamaica is the home of one of the most popular music trends in the world:reggae. Music has always been a part of life in Jamaica. The African slaves who worked on the plantations used songs and drum beats to lift their spirits, communicate secret messages and arrange protests. Through the centuries African music mixed with the rhythms of the European colonialists to create a unique sound. Reggae began to develop in the late 1950s. Jamaica was becoming independent and people wanted to celebrate by singing and dancing in the street.
